Hyvä Free in 2026: Should Your Magento Store Switch Now?

On November 10, 2025, Hyvä Theme became open source and free.

For five years, Hyvä had been the de facto answer to "how do we make Magento frontend actually fast?" — but it cost €1,000 per store license. That license was the single biggest barrier between merchants and the performance gains everyone in the Magento ecosystem could see Hyvä delivering.

Then it disappeared. Hyvä's founder Willem Wigman announced the relicensing at Meet Magento Netherlands on November 6, and four days later the theme was on GitHub under OSL3 + AFL3 — the same licenses as Magento Open Source itself.

The Magento community reaction was immediate. Within two weeks of the announcement, GitHub downloads were up 25% year-over-year. Agencies that had been quietly recommending Hyvä to enterprise clients started recommending it to small and mid-market merchants too.

So the obvious question every Magento store owner is asking: should we switch to Hyvä?

I'm Vlad Kozak, founder of StageM. We've worked with Magento since 2018 and delivered 70+ Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source projects, and I covered our approach to performance and migration decisions in my talk at Magento Meet Ukraine 2025. The honest answer to the Hyvä question is: it depends — but the considerations are clearer than most articles suggest. Here's how we walk clients through the decision.

What Actually Changed on November 10

Before the decision framework, a quick fact base — because there's already misinformation floating around about exactly what's free and what's not.

What's free now:

  • The Hyvä Theme itself (core frontend framework — Tailwind CSS + Alpine.js)

  • All compatibility modules that support the Hyvä Theme

What's still paid:

  • Hyvä UI — the component library — €250 per Magento store (down from being bundled in the previous license)

  • Hyvä Checkout — conversion-optimized checkout — €1,000 one-time + annual support

  • Hyvä Enterprise — full Adobe Commerce compatibility — €2,500/year

  • Hyvä Commerce — all-in-one bundle — €3,000/year

So "Hyvä is free" is technically accurate but slightly misleading. The base theme is free. If you want the polished components, optimized checkout, or Adobe Commerce support, those are still paid products.

For most merchants asking the question, the relevant change is just the theme. The €1,000 license that used to block adoption is gone. Whether you eventually pay for UI or Checkout becomes a separate decision later.

What Hyvä Actually Does (For Non-Technical Readers)

If you're not a developer, here's the version that matters for your business.

Magento's default theme — Luma — is built on a frontend stack that's getting old. jQuery, RequireJS, KnockoutJS, complex XML layouts. It works, but it loads a lot of code that modern browsers don't need, which makes pages slow.

Hyvä rebuilt the entire frontend from scratch using two modern, lightweight tools: Tailwind CSS for styling and Alpine.js for interactivity. The result is dramatic by ecommerce standards.

The numbers: Luma typically loads around 230 page requests and 3MB of uncompressed assets on a product page. Hyvä loads about 5 page requests and 0.4MB. That's a 98% reduction in HTTP requests and an 86% reduction in page weight.

For your customers, this translates to pages that feel instant on mobile, especially on 4G connections in markets where bandwidth isn't unlimited. For Google, this translates to Core Web Vitals scores that pass — Hyvä-powered stores hit Core Web Vitals benchmarks 65% of the time, compared to 41% for traditional Magento stores. That difference directly affects search rankings.

For your developer team, it translates to a faster, simpler codebase that's easier to customize and maintain.

When Hyvä Makes Sense for Your Store

In our practice, Hyvä is the right choice when several of these conditions are true:

Your current frontend is genuinely slow. PageSpeed scores in the 30-50 range on mobile. LCP above 3 seconds. Real customer complaints about speed. If your existing theme already scores 80+ and your customers aren't complaining, the urgency is lower.

You're already planning a frontend redesign. If you were going to invest in frontend work anyway, doing that work in Hyvä instead of Luma costs roughly the same and produces a faster store as a bonus.

Your store is mid-market or growing. Hyvä excels for stores doing real volume — €500K to €50M annually is the sweet spot. Below that, the migration ROI takes longer. Above that, you probably need Hyvä Enterprise, not just the free theme.

Your customizations are reasonable. If your current Luma customizations are mostly styling, layout adjustments, and standard ecommerce features, Hyvä migration is straightforward. If you've built deeply custom checkout flows, complex configurators, or product builders on top of Luma, the migration is significantly more involved.

You're already on Magento 2.4.4 or above. Hyvä works on 2.4.4+, but you get the full feature set on current versions. If you're on older Magento 2.4.x, the Magento upgrade is a prerequisite.

You have ongoing development capacity. Hyvä is simpler than Luma for new development, but the migration itself requires a team that knows the framework. Don't migrate without a clear plan for who maintains it afterward.

When Hyvä Doesn't Make Sense (Yet)

The harder conversation is when to wait. Hyvä migration isn't free even with a free theme — the work to migrate still costs money. We tell clients to delay or skip Hyvä migration when:

Your store has bigger problems first. If your Magento store has the symptoms we cover in our 12-point audit checklist — version drift, broken cron, security gaps, database bloat — fix those first. Hyvä on a broken Magento store is still a broken Magento store with a faster frontend.

Your custom checkout is critical to conversions. Hyvä Checkout is a separate paid product (€1,000), and rebuilding a heavily customized Luma checkout in Hyvä is non-trivial. If your checkout is your competitive advantage, migrate carefully or budget for Hyvä Checkout from the start.

Your extension stack is fragile. While 1,000+ extensions are now Hyvä-compatible, not all are. If your store depends on niche or older extensions that haven't been ported to Hyvä, you'll either need to wait, replace them, or pay for compatibility work.

You're considering a platform migration. If you're seriously evaluating moving from Magento to Shopify Plus or commercetools, don't invest in Hyvä migration first. The Hyvä work doesn't transfer.

Your store is small and stable. If you're doing under €200K annually with a Luma theme that scores acceptably, the migration ROI is harder to justify. Hyvä becomes more compelling when your traffic and conversion volumes make a 1-2% conversion improvement meaningful in absolute revenue.

The Real Cost of "Free"

Hyvä's theme being free doesn't mean Hyvä migration is free. Here's the honest cost breakdown.

The free part: the theme itself, GitHub access, free Composer keys (up to five per account, fifty per agency).

What still costs money:

  • Migration development — typically 6-12 weeks for a mid-market store. Cost depends heavily on your customizations, extension stack, and whether the work is combined with other projects.

  • Extension compatibility — most major extensions have Hyvä-compatible versions, but if you have 30+ extensions installed, expect at least some compatibility work.

  • Frontend redesign — Hyvä uses different patterns than Luma. Even if you keep the same visual design, templates need rebuilding.

  • Optional Hyvä products — if you decide you want UI (€250), Checkout (€1,000), or Commerce/Enterprise — those are separate.

  • Ongoing maintenance — your dev team needs to know Tailwind and Alpine.js. If they don't, factor in training or hiring.

For a typical mid-market Magento store, the total Hyvä migration investment in 2026 lands somewhere between what you'd spend on a major Luma redesign and what a full platform migration would cost — closer to the redesign side. The difference is what you get afterward: a frontend that's measurably faster, simpler to maintain, and built on technology that the wider web development world actually uses.

How to Approach the Decision

If you're weighing Hyvä migration for your store, here's the sequence we recommend:

1. Audit your current Magento health first. A Hyvä migration on a broken Magento backend won't fix your real problems. Start with our 12-point audit checklist or a professional audit.

2. Measure your current frontend honestly. Real PageSpeed scores from real user data, not lab tests. Bounce rates segmented by device. Core Web Vitals from Search Console. If those are already healthy, the urgency is low.

3. Inventory your extensions. Make a list of your active extensions and check which have Hyvä-compatible versions. The Hyvä compatibility list is well-maintained on hyva.io.

4. Estimate ROI realistically. A 10% conversion improvement on a €100K/year store is €10K. On a €5M/year store, it's €500K. Migration costs don't scale the same way. Bigger stores see faster payback.

5. Get an estimate before deciding. Migration cost varies enormously based on your specific store. A 1-week scoping engagement with an agency that's done this before costs less than committing to a migration that turns out to be twice the size you expected.

6. Consider phased rollouts. You don't have to migrate everything at once. Some stores migrate the storefront to Hyvä while keeping their existing checkout, then swap checkout later. Phased migrations reduce risk and let you measure impact at each stage.

Where Hyvä Fits in the Bigger Magento Picture

The Hyvä open-source decision doesn't change the fundamentals of running a Magento store. You still need a healthy backend, current Magento version, proper caching, working cron, and clean code. Hyvä is a frontend solution to a frontend problem.

Where Hyvä changes the equation is in long-term Magento strategy. For years, the conventional wisdom was that Magento's frontend was its weakness compared to Shopify and that a serious modern Magento store needed to either tolerate slow Luma or invest in expensive headless setups (PWA Studio, Vue Storefront, custom React frontends).

With Hyvä free, that calculation shifts. Mid-market Magento stores now have access to enterprise-grade frontend technology without enterprise-grade licensing. The performance gap that pushed merchants toward Shopify is materially smaller in 2026 than it was in 2024.

For agencies and developers, Hyvä going open source signals something larger about Magento's future. The community is investing in keeping the platform competitive. The infrastructure for fast, modern Magento stores is more accessible than it's been in years.

For store owners, the practical implication is simpler: if frontend performance was on your roadmap for 2026, Hyvä just got considerably more affordable to consider seriously.

What to Do Next

Three paths forward, depending on where your store is:

If you're already on Hyvä with a paid license: nothing changes. Your premium support continues. You retain access to Hyvä UI under your existing license.

If you've been waiting for the price to drop: the wait is over. Start with an audit of your current Magento setup, then scope a migration with an agency that has Hyvä experience. Don't migrate without a plan for ongoing maintenance.

If you're not sure whether Hyvä is right for your store: book a discovery call with an agency that will give you an honest assessment. The right answer for your store depends on factors that don't fit in an article — your specific customizations, traffic, conversion patterns, and growth plans.

Want our take on whether Hyvä migration makes sense for your specific store? Book a 30-minute discovery call — we'll review your current setup, performance metrics, and goals, and give you an honest recommendation. No sales pressure.

Prefer to start with self-diagnosis? Run our 12-point Magento audit checklist first. The audit results will tell you whether Hyvä migration should be your next priority — or whether you have other issues to address first.

Hyvä being free is genuinely good news for the Magento ecosystem. But "free" and "right for your store right now" are different questions. The merchants who win in 2026 are the ones who answer the second question carefully.
